I dunno Ford backed down from his 25% electricity export surcharge right away… Let’s get a plan between the feds and provinces and coordinate in executing the retaliations. Then when T[rump] slaps 50% steel and aluminium tariffs Quebec and NFLD adds a electricrity surcharge to their exports.
I was so disappointed to hear he folded so quickly on the surcharge. Trump himself has said that America doesn’t need Canada’s energy at the start of his trade war. If Doug had a spine he would have put that surcharge on until a new deal has been signed. That deal should have conditions that the surcharge will come back and could increase if America wants to start the trade war back up.
Lets not play his game of flipping and flopping every few days and making big headlines, instead lets make a decision and follow through with it.
He backed down and had talks with US officials. Now that Trump has shown that the talks didn’t accomplish anything Ford might be more inclined to hold his ground next time.
Thinking that Drug Fraud has enough of a conscience to support Canadians over his own selfish desires is like spitting into the wind.
Dude just likes making people think he cares, when in fact he doesn’t give a shit about anyone but himself.
He might get to go on another vacation down to DC again why would he give that up? Heck maybe him and his 12 buddies will go down there again to talk to an assistant of a secretary for the assistant to the secretary of Trade.
I don’t think Ford backed down. He said he would retaliate…then Trump changed his threat (backed down). Seriously, we don’t want a full on tariff war. Just because the Canadian government isn’t broadcasting: “WE JUST GOT A DEAL WITH BLAH, BLAH, BLAH”, “WE NOW ARE GOING TO DEAL WITH JOE BLOW!”, “WE ARE THE BEST!!!” This doesn’t mean we aren’t working on separating from the US, and working on other trade deals. Mark Carney is experienced and skilled in global economics. (He advised the UK against brexit). I am a firm believer in education and experience. Elbows Up! But don’t be too quick to invite a trade war.
Lol, for a moment I thought they were referring to Ford Motor Company and I was very confused …
They are already inflicting much pain on their users (had a ford “fuckus”).
how about we shore up our own manufacturing and logistics and cut the US off entirely while we reach out to our friends in the global community?
Because it takes years to build manufacturing capacity, and the tariffs are going to hurt US citizens immediately. Also, the tariffs aren’t just on cars, they’re also on metals and Chinese imports, so companies are going to have to pay extra to import raw and refined materials as well as tech goods that we don’t mine or make ourselves.
That’s a reason these knee-jerk tariffs are so stupid. He just waves a magic wand and declares something and then it’s someone else’s problem to deal with, no guidance, no assistance; he can throw blame around to say it’s not his fault when shit doesn’t work. It hurts the US citizens a lot, will harm markets, retirements, as company profits are impacted, and is just generally a shit idea. The right way would have taken years, incentives, and loans to industry to shore up US manufacturing, but those greedy fucks usually just soak up the money and shrug their shoulders without actually improving much. Now they get to suffer, too.
We’re going to make sure that we inflict as much pain as possible to the American people
So now he’s back to having the same platform as trump?
He talks tough, but will go ‘buk bok’ as soon as Trump turns in his direction. F’ing pisses me off.
It was a joke that Trump’s plan was also to inflict as much pain as possible to the American people.
We got the joke - but are you sure you got Ford?
Right? Not sure I trust Ford long term, even though he’s saying a lot of the right things right now.
It does seem to be the rare case where Ford and Chow are aligned, but she’s actually taking action https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-tariff-response-plan-1.7494034
A broken clock is right twice of the day, but we don’t call it a working clock. And it’s worse when the clock actually works somewhat and changes its speed to match more times of the day.
The whole point of Trump threatening scariffs is a mind game to wear down Canada’s resolve. That won’t happen. He doesn’t need us? Apparently he does. He wants our water, and he wants our natural resources. Danielle Smith is obviously a traitor. So is PP. He’s just changed his rhetoric to garner votes.
Typical Ford. He only understands bullying and brutality, just like his (former?) BFF Trump. In other wirds, a dumb, nasty piece of work.
I think that as angry as Canadians have been and maybe still are, we’re less interested in retaliating and far more interested in defending ourselves while we move on from the US.
I think ford is an opportunist before all else. Whatever he thinks, in the moment, will score him some points, he does.
This trade war opportunity was perfect for him, because bullying comes naturally, and a lot of Canadians wanted to hear some snark thrown back at the cheeto president.
But the longer it goes on, the more it becomes clear that “let’s hurt some Americans” is the entire plan, and it’s not actually all that helpful.
Canada shouldn’t retaliate with US tariffs: It should hit the USA where it hurts, instead.
Absolutely, we need to end the anti jailbreaking laws that allow US companies to extract rents from Canadian customers.
I don’t want to hurt other provinces.
The only provinces he would hurt would be Alberta and Saskatchewan really. Saskatchewan’s DUI hire is already licking the wounds of the Potash cut off, some how the idiot did not think that Trump would do anything that would hurt us here in Saskatchewan. Next Trump is going to say he is getting his uranium from elsewhere and really stick it to Moe-ron. It is really to bad that we here in Saskatchewan will not see it in slo-Moe but rather in real time.
Then there is the election interfering Smith who will hopefully get a good investigation done on her for the election interfering, so Ford should not worry about that as the people in Alberta will be after her. Soon I hope.
This guy needs to shut up and just do the electricity surcharge he threatened to do weeks ago but became too spineless to actually implement. Hell, if he does that, I’ll personally go and cheer for him, despite being a Ford hater for the better part of two decades.
Put his words into actions for once and stop being such a traitorous wuss.
Aren’t we already punching ourselves in the face with the tariffs?
I think we got this all wrong, just ask to remove the tarrifs while we start the négociations between the provinces around the Constitution, and get back to Trump once we all agree.
