I have been on Lemmy for a while now but never posted anything as a new post so please forgive me if I am doing anything wrong.
I see that I am part of lemmy.world and that this instance is frowned upon.
Is there a better instance I can join? I am not very clued up on Lemmy and as far as I can see it is made up of lots of different sites which are linked together.
I just want to be part of a healthy group and I am just getting into astronomy so are there any good groups for that please?
If it helps I am based in the UK.
Have a great weekend all.
Edit: sorry for the late response another 6 day week at work. Thank you all so much for the very useful advice!
If you want to stay on lemmy.world, you can. As you can see in the comments, everyones username is @username@instance.name, you can follow communities from any lemmy instance and people from any instance can comment.
As for picking an instance, i’d avoid beehaw.org, hexbear.net, lemmygrad.ml and lemmy.ml.
Lemmy.world is frowned upon because its too big, so it has some performance issues and moderation issues.
Queer people suggesting not to join instances fighting for their rights, with 0 given reason is kind of wild not gonna lie
Many of us here are queer as well and I don’t think I’ll ever understand right-wing LGBT
This was a while ago, but I want to clarify,
I reccommended avoiding beehaw because its typically not what people are looking for out of lemmy. Don’t get me wrong, they have a great community and its very well moderated, but its likely not what OP wanted.
I didn’t reccommend hex, grad and .ml because of the tankies and because they are controversial and get defederated a lot. I have immense respect for hexbears defense of lgbt rights, but they probably aren’t the best for your average lemmy worlder.
Thank you for clarifying but I think you go over the main topic a bit quickly. What does it mean “because of the tankies”? Who are the tankies and what have they done that is to be avoided by going to another instance?
Well, the people who are fans of authoritiarian regimes(like the soviet union), and are pro china/russia. Those instances specifically house those people, which leads to them getting defederated from major instances.
Again, thank you for trying to explain.
I consider I understand enough to answer then. Please don’t take my judgements personally or as an insult.
I think this is biased view of the socialists of Lemmy. They have a critical support (mostly positive and negative on the negative parts) of the people revolution of 1917 in Russia and the Soviet union. They also have a critical support of China and encroyages it’s socialist ways, they are the biggest communist lead country today and a wonderful counter power to the US and EU imperialism (the enabler of capitalism, don’t mix up other weird definitions). They have a small critical support of Russia, because even though they can’t support it’s government for its ideology, it also participates in anti-US imperialism. Socialists don’t praise authoritarian “regimes” (yep, that’s a clue of propaganda regurgitation). Socialists do support something also called dictatorship, but it’s the dictatorship of proletariat, to reverse the current dictatorship of the bourgeoisie
What leads liberal (which is the idealogy of capitalism, not any another weird definition) instances of Lemmy to defedarate is because… they are liberal. It is difficult for people evolving in a liberal society, drenched in daily capitalist propaganda to accept challenging views
I don’t have the time to write a full reply right now, but I just used the word “regime” to describe any sort of a system. I would refer to the u.s as a capitalist regime, for example. Am I using it wrong?
