This infograph should probably also include that Kagi uses the Russian search index Yandex also. It basically says that Kagi is the best search engine and that it fits all the requirements, but puts Brave in a bad light due to their CEO. If ethics are to be included, I believe Kagis use of Yandex should also be included.

Fucking Kanye…
Runaway and Ghost town are fantastic songs.
There only two tracks I would pirate, and it is those two. I don’t want to support him financially.
Thank you! I’ll check them out and probably add several to my RSS reader.
Thanks, I’ll checkout more of the sites you added. This seems interesting and good journalism. I try to mainly consume content that have a high signal/noise ratio, so quality is everything.
I think it’s a good enough business model, if we want high quality indepth reporting where they do analysis on dumps of databases based on FOIA requests (really time consuming), and things that require more than surface level reporting, then people need to have this as a fulltime job. A lot of tech newssites just regurgitate news they get from big tech, or do surface level reporting and opinion pieces. While that is useful as well, it’s not investigative and as in-depth.
We want professional journalists for a reason. We need it as a society. We need to be sure that they don’t do harm to innocent people, that they actually have proof and sources etc. We need people to hold people and companies accountable. Someone has to actually produce the content that other newssites refer to.
They need to get paid on a consistent basis, just like everyone else. That is the most sustainable way we have in a capitalist society.
Small donations from a vast amount of people would be perfect, but is hard to achieve. Which is why they have probably gone for paywalled subscriptions and ads.
Not exactly what you are looking for, but 404media is independent owned by the journalists themselves and report on tech news and how it is affecting society.
Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
There aren’t many good alternatives in Europe besides Mistral.
I am not a fan of self-hosting. The reason is maintenance, security and recommendations to others.
I can’t tell my friends and family to self-host, but I can tell them to use Mistral instead of ChatGPT.
That leaves us with often using proprietary solutions, and open-source but hosted by the company.
There are a couple of streaming services in Europe. It seems that most of them are targeted at specific countries, but still.
I have enjoyed a Norwegian one with mainly Norwegian content and BritBox, with a little bit of Hollywood stuff sprinkled on top.
I agree, but don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
Reddit probably don’t make that much money per user. If using Reddit makes more people buy european that probably has a bigger impact per person. If I buy 10 european groceries instead of American, then that probably affects the US economy more than a year of Reddit use.
I love to travel in Europe. They all have their special place in my heart.
The fantastic beer and variations across countries. The architecture and languages. The varied cuisine 👩🍳👨🍳 Bikes, weed and shrooms ❤️ 🇳🇱 Bathing and chilling in the sun. Everywhere is pretty much safe (some exceptions, but in general). The gorgeous rural areas. Wine. People are generally really friendly. People say that Germans and French people don’t speak English to them, but that is not my experience, I have yet to meet a single European not go out of their way to help and be nice to me. Some have been in a hurry, but are still nice. Most people tend to appreciate the interest in their culture, their recommendations and their opinions.
I love you all, my fellow Europeans ❤️🇪🇺🇳🇴
Qobuz is a great French alternative
Just came across https://d-shoot.net/kagi.html . Seems like there are more good reasons to avoid it besides it also using Yandex as an index.
I have been sick a lot lately, so have had a lot of time on my hands. I don’t have a search for Kagi or something. I wanted to use Kagi though, so I was disappointed when I realized that they want to continue this practice.
What are you implying with it being suspicious? In what way?
If Kagi pays a Russian company for a service, that company pays taxes to the Russian government.
Russia spends 32% of its budget on the Russian military. So for every dollar they get in taxes, one third is spent on the Russian military.
With a corporate tax rate of 20% that means 6.4% of Yandex profits go to the military. Since Kagi is mainly a paid service, I don’t want my money to go to the Russian military, and I guess a lot of other people don’t want this either.

The Russian people are not to blame, and I am sure a lot of great people work at Yandex and at different companies in Russia. That said, Russia chose to attack a peaceful democratic country, they are currently sanctioned by a lot of western countries in hopes that it will pressure their economy enough to force them to stop the war.
There isn’t much we can do to stop the conflict besides hurting them economically and supporting Ukraine. If we continue to use Russian products and services then that does not work. Unfortunately this affects everyone in Russia.
Obligatory mention that Kagi also use the Russian search index Yandex. This aids the Russian economy and the Russian war effort.
Edit: I recommend reading my in depth explanation here https://lemmy.world/comment/15520236
I have started subscribing to services in Europe now. They have different content, but that is fine. I want Europe to have more TV shows and movies. The American ones I’ll probably just pirate if I really really want to watch it. We’ll see.
I am not a huge fan of IP and copyright in the first place, I see that it has a value, but don’t like how long it lasts. There should be a reasonable time of 10-15 years or something, but not more in my opinion.
The legality is not an argument that works for me. The only thing that matters is ethics / morality.
At the moment I don’t want to support American business, and that is more important to me. I have been a paying subscriber to several services for a long time, but no more.
I guess the question is if they have lost a “sale” / “subscriber” that they would have gotten if I did not have the opportunity to pirate.
I don’t think they have, I would not want to pay if I had no other option either.
I often refer to my wife as my girlfriend. It’s cozy and it’s kinda like a very vanilla form of roleplay. “Remember when we were younger, and just met”-kinda thing.
